High Injury Network
The High Injury Network (HIN) is a collection of twenty (20) roadway segments with a disproportionately high number of crashes that resulted in a death or serious injury. Addressing safety along the HIN will help to accelerate progress toward eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by focusing on the region's most dangerous roadways (not including I-75). The HIN segments represent about 2.8% of the region's non-interstate roadway network, yet are responsible for 44.8% of fatal and serious injury crashes, and 39% of deadly crashes.
The map below offers a more detailed view of the High Injury Network. The HIN segments in red have the highest number of fatal and serious injury crashes compared to segments in orange and green.

Destination Zero Crash Assessment (2023)
In 2023, the MPO updated the Destination Zero Crash Assessment using 2017–2022 data from Signal4Analytics. The data summarized in this assessment represent KSI crashes, or crashes in which someone was killed or seriously injured.
The most deadly crash type in Sarasota/Manatee County involves pedestrians. A pedestrian is defined as someone who is walking, running, skating, using a wheelchair or other mobility device, or using micromobility devices such as e-scooters. Nearly one-quarter of all fatal crashes in the region involve a pedestrian, and on average approximately 25–26 pedestrians lose their lives each year in roadway crashes.
The second most deadly crash type is run-off-road crashes, also referred to as road departure crashes. These crashes occur when a driver leaves the roadway and often result in collisions with fixed objects such as signs, trees, buildings, light poles, or control boxes. On average, this crash type results in approximately 20–21 deaths and 114 serious injuries each year.
Left-turn crashes are the third most deadly crash type. These crashes tend to be severe due to differences in travel speeds between turning and through vehicles and the side-impact nature of the collision. Between 2017 and 2022, annual serious injuries from left-turn crashes declined from 230 to 121, which can be attributed to roadway improvements such as protected left-turns, dedicated turn lanes, roundabouts, and RCUTs (Restricted Crossing U-Turn intersections).
