Destination Zero

Destination Zero is the Sarasota/Manatee MPO's strategy for making significant reductions in the number of fatal and serious injury crashes on our roads. The only acceptable number of life-ending and life-changing crashes is zero. Learn more about what the MPO and its partners are doing to improve roadway safety in the region for all users.

Safety Action Plan

What is an acceptable number of people killed or seriously injured on our roadways?
The Sarasota/Manatee MPO believes that the only acceptable number is ZERO

On February 28, 2022, the Sarasota/Manatee MPO Board adopted its first safety action plan: Destination Zero. Destination Zero is the strategy that will put us on the path toward reducing and eventually eliminating all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries on our roadways. The Sarasota/Manatee MPO supports FDOT's Target Zero initiative and the global Vision Zero movement to reduce traffic-related deaths and serious injuries to zero.

Destination Zero Safety Action Plan

The Destination Zero Safety Action Plan is organized around the Safe System Approach, a layered set of principles and objectives adopted by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Learn more about the Safe System Approach from the US DOT website: What Is a Safe System Approach?

The Destination Zero Safety Action Plan identifies a set of six holistic and comprehensive implementable strategy groups.

Making significant reductions in deadly and incapacitating traffic-related crashes will require a coordinated, dedicated, and ongoing effort among transportation professionals, policymakers and elected officials, first responders, data scientists, educators, and all roadway users

Transform 2045 is the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization's 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). It was adopted in October 2020 and is updated every five years. The MPO's LRTP provides a framework of goals and objectives to guide multimodal transportation investments in the region. Chapter 2 of the 2045 LRTP emphasizes improvements in safety for all users and modes, as well as in the resiliency of our transportation system.

To learn more about the MPO's work on resiliency and vulnerability, visit: Resiliency/Vulnerability Assessment (mympo.org).

The 2045 LRTP Safety objectives are to:

  • decrease vehicle crashes at hazardous locations
  • reduce crashes and conflicts between all users and modes
  • improve safety for vulnerable users
  • iimprove system for evacuation and recovery
  • provide education to increase safety and security

Transportation projects are prioritized if they:

  • Address an identified motorized or non-motorized high crash location
  • Improve safety for vulnerable users
  • Improve traffic flow on an evacuation route
