Traffic Watch for Manatee and Sarasota Counties - Week of May 5, 2024

Motorists are reminded to wear safety belts and drive with caution, courtesy, common sense, and patience as they travel through work zones. Remember, speeding fines are doubled in work zones.

MANATEE COUNTY

I-75 at US 301 Interchange (Exit 224): Construction project: Project will widen the I-75 from SR 64 to the Manatee River, reconfigure the I-75/US 301 interchange from a partial cloverleaf interchange to a tight diamond configuration, construct new bridges will be constructed over the Manatee River for a northbound exit ramp and a southbound entrance ramp, and US 301 improvements. This week, crews will work on I-75 paving; drainage, utility, and sidewalk work on US 301; and, beam installation, and decking for the construction of the new bridgesover the Manatee River.

  • On Thursday, May 9, at 9 p.m. to Friday, May 10 at 5 a.m., crews will CLOSE the I-75 northbound exit ramp to US 301 southbound (Exit 224).  Motorists will exit at I-75 northbound to US 301 northbound, make a U-turn at 60th St E, and return to US 301 southbound.

  • From Thursday, May 9, at 9 p.m. to Friday, May 10 at 5 a.m., crews will CLOSE the US 301 southbound to I-75 southbound ramp (Exit 224).  Motorists will continue on US 301 southbound to 51st St E, make a U-turn, and use the US 301 northbound ramp to I-75 southbound.

  • Motorists should expect double lane closures on I-75 northbound during nighttime/overnight hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the duration of the construction; double closures on I-75 southbound during the nighttime/overnight hours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the duration of the construction.

  • Motorists should expect lane closures on US 301 during nighttime/overnight hoursfrom 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.through the duration of the construction.

  • Motorists should expect lane closures on Tidewater Preserve Boulevard through the duration of bridge construction.

  • Motorists should expect lane shifts on I-75 and US 301 through the duration of the construction.

  • Drivers should exercise caution and be aware of construction vehicles entering and exiting the interstate through the duration of the construction.

    Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway.  Estimated completion is mid-2025.

I-75 between Exit 217 (SR 70) and Exit 220 (SR 64): Construction: Crews will be working in the roadway and mobilizing equipment.

May 6 – 9 and May 12, 2024 - Temporary overnight lane closures are needed from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. This affects both inside lanes of north and southbound I-75 as they demobilize the crane and equipment from the median.

US 41 BUS from 17th to Bayshore Road/ 26th Street, including the 23rd Street Roundabout, Palmetto: Construction:  Work is being finalized so please use caution in the construction zone and be alert for construction and landscaping in the area.

  • Motorists should anticipate lane shifts and use caution in the area.

US 301 from 25th Court East to 13th Avenue East: Construction project: Crews have begun a 7.6-mile improvements project consisting of milling and resurfacing the roadway, widening in areas, base work, curb and gutter, sidewalk, guardrail, drainage improvements, bridge expansion joints, signalization, lighting, and signing and pavement marking.  

  • Motorists should expect shoulder closures including pedestrian access restrictions along the US 301 corridor northbound and southbound between 25th Court East and 9th Avenue East. Alternate pedestrian routes will be clearly posted. To maintain safety, pedestrians should follow the posted detour signage.

  • Motorists can expect right-turn lane closures at the intersections of US 301 and Tallevast Road to 9th Avenue East from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    The project’s expected completion is late 2024.

US 301 and Moccasin Wallow Road Roundabout: Permit project: Crews are constructing the Manatee County roundabout at the intersection of US 301 and Moccasin Wallow Road. Plan for additional travel time or consider an alternate route. Please use caution.

SR 70 from Lorraine Road to Bourneside Boulevard: Construction project: This project includes widening SR 70 from Lorraine Road to Bourneside Boulevard from a two-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane or six-lane divided roadway, depending on the location, construction of roundabouts on SR 70 at Uihlein Road, Del Webb Boulevard, and Bourneside Boulevard, intersection improvements at the existing signalized intersection of Greenbrook Boulevard and Lorraine Road, construction of four bridges over Braden River crossings, new drainage system, construction 10-foot shared use paths, street lighting, and landscaping, and installation of new fiber optic cable connecting the two signalized intersections to Manatee County’s regional Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS).

This week, crews will be clearing existing vegetation between Lorraine Road and De Webb Boulevard on the south side of SR 70 and clearing the Pond A area on the north side of SR 70, west of Uihlein Road and excavating. Crews will continue excavating the Pond area on the southeast corner of Bourneside Boulevard and SR 70. Material will be hauled to the south side of SR 70 between Bourneside Boulevard and Uihlein Road and placed as roadway fill. Drainage work will begin on SR 70 east of Bourneside Boulevard.

Work will continue constructing eastbound bridges, this will involve driving bridge piles via hydraulic hammer and grading the river channel. This work will occur during daytime hours and produce noise that may be audible to the surrounding area. Bridge work will continue into summer.

All work will be off the roadway with no planned lane closures. Please use caution and watch for trucks and construction vehicles entering or exiting the work zone by way of the eastbound SR 70 shoulder. Work will occur Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please use caution and be aware of workers and flaggers in the area.

SR 70 and Lockwood Ridge Road: Permit project: Through the end of May, motorists can expect an intermittent westbound left turn lane closure, within the duel left turn lanes.  Manatee County is constructing right turn lanes on Lockwood Ridge Road. Please use caution in the area.

SR 64 at Lorraine Road South and 145th Street North: Construction:  Crews will begin work on the conversion of the traffic signal to a free-flowing roundabout. The initial Phase 1, starting May 6, will have limited impact on traffic. Phases II through IV, will reduce the roadway to single lanes in each direction.

SR 64 at Bourneside Boulevard to Rangeland Parkway: Permit project: Manatee County has closed this section of Bourneside Boulevard through October. Please choose an alternate route.

SR 64 from 43rd Street West to 15th Street East and from 10th Street West to 10th Street East: Construction project: Construction is underway for the 1.7-mile resurfacing project through the City of Bradenton. Completion is slated for spring 2024.

  • Crews will begin overnight paving on May 5, 2024.

  • Expect noise and light from construction equipment.

  • Motorists should consider additional travel time or an alternate route.

 

 

 

SARASOTA COUNTY

I-75 at SR 72/Clark Road (Exit 205): Construction project: Project improvements include reconstructing the existing interchange to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), adding auxiliary lane on I-75 northbound from SR 72 to Bee Ridge Road, widen I-75 southbound from Proctor Road to SR 72, and improvements on Clark Road. This week, crews will work on the ramps, guardrails, retaining walls, and paving.

  • Motorists should expect single lane closures on I-75 during nighttime/overnight hours from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. bound through the duration of the construction.

  • Motorists should expect double lane closures on I-75 during nighttime/overnight hours from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. through the duration of the construction.

  • Motorists should expect lane closures on SR 72 during nighttime/overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through the duration of the construction.

  • Motorists should expect lane shifts on I-75 and SR 72 through the duration of the construction.
  • Drivers should exercise caution and be aware of construction vehicles entering and exiting the interstate through the duration of the construction.

Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Estimated completion is mid-2024.

I-75 and Toledo Blade: Landscaping project: Through the end of June, FDOT will be installing landscaping and associated irrigation within the interchange. Motorists can expect occasional shoulder closures on Toledo Blade and I-75 ramps. Please use caution in the area.

US 41 from North of Port Commons from north of Port Commons to State College of Florida, Sarasota: Construction project: Project improvements include milling and resurfacing, guardrail, drainage improvements, signing and pavement markings, and signalization improvements. Expected completion is fall 2024.

Daytime Activities:

  • Install barrier walls for upcoming lane shifts and close median openings for roadway crossover reconstruction.

  • Median openings at Myakka Drive, Riverwalk Drive, Boardwalk, Ortega Place, De Miranda Avenue, Eager Street and Hoffman Street will be closed for reconstruction work. Hoffman Street crossover will be removed and remain permanently closed.

  • Motorists will be able to turn right only onto US 41 at these locations.

  • Build concrete curb between Tuscola Boulevard and Espanola Drive.

  • Curb removal and turn lane reconstruction between Tuscola Boulevard and Ortiz Boulevard.

Daytime Lane Closures:

  • Daytime lane closures Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Northbound inside lane closures between Tuscola Boulevard and Ortiz Boulevard.

Nighttime Activities:

  • Nighttime lane closures Sunday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

  • Northbound inside lane closures between Tuscola Boulevard and Ortiz Boulevard.

Motorists should use caution when making U-turns and be aware of workers in the area.

US 41 from Caribbean Drive to Stickney Point: Construction: Construction on the next phase along a 1.4-mile area of US 41 from Caribbean Drive to Stickney Point Road is actively underway. Work consists of implementing safety improvements along the corridor including resurfacing, lighting and signalization, median improvements, shoulder reconstruction, improved sidewalks, improved bicycle lanes, as well as needed infrastructure improvements to drainage, curb and gutter.

  • Lane Closures: Periodic single lane closures will be needed both north and southbound.  Motorists should expect slower moving traffic and consider alternate routes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Crews continue to work on drainage in the project corridor.
  • From Caribbean Drive to Gulf Gate Road: Temporary lane closures may be necessary to maintain crew safety.

US 41 at Wellen Park Villages Roundabout: Permit project:  Construction of the remaining roundabout at Wellen Park is underway on US 41. Lane closures are required. Consider alternate routes or add additional travel time during peak hours. Use caution in the area.

SR 72 Clark Road and the Legacy Trail: Construction Project: Crews have begun constructing two new pedestrian bridges and intersection improvements along the Legacy Trail in Sarasota County. Expect noise from construction equipment, large trucks, and back-up alarms.  Occasional nighttime shoulder and/or lane closures during construction to install beams will also be needed. Expected completion is winter 2024/2025. Occasional flagging operations will be needed. Use caution in the area as large vehicles enter/ exit the roadway.

  • Noise from construction equipment should be expected.
  • In the coming weeks, pile driving will begin.
  • Currently, there no expected lane closures.

  • Occasional daytime flagging operations will be needed. Use caution in the area as large construction vehicles enter/exit the roadway.

  • Nighttime shoulder and/or lane closures to install beams will also be needed.

  • Expected completion is winter 2024/2025.

SR 758 Bee Ridge Road at the Legacy Trail: Construction Project: Crews have begun constructing two new pedestrian bridges and intersection improvements along the Legacy Trail in Sarasota County. Expect noise from construction equipment, large trucks, and back-up alarms.

  • Noise from construction equipment should be expected.
  • In the coming weeks, pile driving will begin.
  • Currently, there no expected lane closures.

  • Occasional daytime flagging operations will be needed. Use caution in the area as large construction vehicles enter/exit the roadway.

  • Nighttime shoulder and/or lane closures to install beams will also be needed.

  • Expected completion is winter 2024/2025.

SR 776 at the Northeast Corner of Manasota Beach Road: Permit project: Through the end of May, Sarasota County will be constructing intersection improvements, including a right turn lane and signalization.  From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. motorists can expect an intermittent outside northbound lane closure on SR 776.  Please use caution in the area.

SR 777 River Road from I-75 to US 41: Construction project: Motorists can expect final pond grading and sodding near Venice Avenue on the northbound roadway. Embankment activities continue on southbound roadway from US 41 to Stoney Creek Boulevard. Drainage structures, pipe, curb and gutter, and gravity wall installations will also continue throughout the project. Signal, ITS, and lighting work is also on-going throughout the project. Trucks will be crossing the road at various locations using intermittent flagging operations.

SR 789 between Longboat Key Club Drive to Harbourside Drive: Permit project: Town of Longboat Key is relocating existing underground utilities and installing sewer line while a new development will be constructing right and left turn lanes and constructing driveways, sidewalk, and drainage.  Motorists can expect alternating intermittent northbound / southbound lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Please use caution in the area.
