Are you ready to influence the future of transportation in your community?

Sarasota, FL – The public is invited to join Manatee and Sarasota County and City Elected Officials, the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 1 to begin the process of prioritizing regional transportation needs for 2045. On April 22, 2019, from 8:30 to 11:30 AM, the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan TransForum will be held at USF Sarasota-Manatee, Selby Auditorium, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34243.

Regional transportation challenges include, reducing traffic delays so employees can get to work on time, improving public transportation, making sure it is safe to walk and bike in the region, ensuring there are safe routes to school for children, and managing stormwater and flooding on the roads. Keeping these in mind, the Sarasota/Manatee MPO uses a process that looks to the regional community to direct the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan.

“We need local government entities and the community at large to tell us their priorities and where we should be spending our money,” says Leigh Holt, MPO Strategic Planning Manager, “It is our job to listen and to hear what they have to say. The reality is, their participation influences the outcome of the MPO Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP)”

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District 1, is encouraging communities to combine Land Use and Transportation planning. Following FDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance, the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will be discussing the connection between transportation and land use at the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan TransForum.

A FDOT report on Florida Transportation Trends and Conditions: Impact of Transportation; Transportation and Land Use (2014) reads, “- reducing traffic congestion, increasing use of public transportation, improving roadway safety, lowering emissions, containing public costs, sustaining economic growth, promoting livable communities, preserving natural areas and resources – is enhanced with effective land use and transportation coordination.”

45-Day Public Review and Comment Period is Now Open

PPP-cover-sheet-07272018-CT

We need your voice

Regional transportation planning is guided by laws, rules, and policies set by federal and state governments.  Both federal and state laws require public participation in the planning process.

Engaging citizens in the transportation planning process promotes successful problem solving, brings in diverse voices and new ideas; allows for greater consideration of local and regional concerns, needs and values; and gives the public a sense of ownership of the developed solutions.

The Public Participation Plan (PPP) provides the guidelines used by the MPO to conduct and document public participation activities.  The PPP is reviewed every three years, or as needed, for possible revisions.

There is a required 45-day review and comment period which began on July 30, 2018 and will end on September 13, 2018.  The complete document is available on the MPO website and is also available at county and city administration buildings and all public libraries. The complete draft of the 2017 Public Participation Plan is available to view and download here.  Any comments made regarding the PPP will be provided at the September 24, 2018 MPO Board meeting prior to adoption.

If you have any comments or questions, please let us know by 5:00PM on Thursday, September 13, 2018 when the official 45-day comment period closes. Please email your comments to Corinne Tucker, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  You may also send your comments to the MPO via mail, 7632 15th Street East, Sarasota, FL 34243, or contact Corinne via telephone 941-359-5772.

We encourage everyone to become involved. Your contribution ensures robust public participation in the MPO transportation planning process. Thank you for your involvement in transportation planning.
