Last Call: MPO survey ends August 31

time-running-out Time for Action

There is still time for members of the public to take the Transform Tomorrow survey. This is the community’s chance to tell the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) how they can improve transportation. Does the region need more cars? bike lanes? trails? buses? Individuals can participate in the survey and transform tomorrow’s transportation here, www.mympo.org/transformtomorrow. The survey closes on August 31.

There has been a tremendous response to the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) “Transform Tomorrow” General Survey, with over 1,000 surveys received to date. The responses from this survey will help the Sarasota/Manatee MPO understand the community’s transportation concerns, needs, and desires. It will also help the MPO understand attitudes toward potential solutions, and how those solutions should be prioritized.

“We are receiving a lot of positive feedback from the survey and comments received from the Transform Tomorrow webpage on our website,” says David Hutchinson, MPO Executive Director. “We value citizen input. It helps us decide how to invest your tax dollars.”

The purpose of the 2045 LRTP is to develop future transportation facilities in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. The LRTP must consider the full complement of transportation modes – roads, bicycles, pedestrians, trails, transit, parking, railroads and airports. The plan includes at least twenty years and must be updated every five years. The 2045 LRTP must include robust public involvement to shape the final plan.

Sarasota, FL – The community is invited to participate in the Transform Tomorrow 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan General Survey. Feedback from the public will help the Sarasota/Manatee MPO understand the community’s transportation concerns, needs, and desires. It will also help the MPO understand attitudes toward potential solutions, and how those solutions should be prioritized.

The Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization updates the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) every 5 years in order to account for geographic shifts in local demographics and changes to location of economic activities (employment, shopping, restaurants, etc), and we are going through this update process right now.

The LRTP must consider the full complement of transportation modes – roads, bicycles, pedestrians, trails, transit, parking, railroads and airports. Are you ready to influence the future of transportation in your community?

Sarasota, FL – The public is invited to join Manatee and Sarasota County and City Elected Officials, the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 1 to begin the process of prioritizing regional transportation needs for 2045. On April 22, 2019, from 8:30 to 11:30 AM, the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan TransForum will be held at USF Sarasota-Manatee, Selby Auditorium, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34243.

Regional transportation challenges include, reducing traffic delays so employees can get to work on time, improving public transportation, making sure it is safe to walk and bike in the region, ensuring there are safe routes to school for children, and managing stormwater and flooding on the roads. Keeping these in mind, the Sarasota/Manatee MPO uses a process that looks to the regional community to direct the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan.

“We need local government entities and the community at large to tell us their priorities and where we should be spending our money,” says Leigh Holt, MPO Strategic Planning Manager, “It is our job to listen and to hear what they have to say. The reality is, their participation influences the outcome of the MPO Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP)”

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District 1, is encouraging communities to combine Land Use and Transportation planning. Following FDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance, the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will be discussing the connection between transportation and land use at the 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan TransForum.

A FDOT report on Florida Transportation Trends and Conditions: Impact of Transportation; Transportation and Land Use (2014) reads, “- reducing traffic congestion, increasing use of public transportation, improving roadway safety, lowering emissions, containing public costs, sustaining economic growth, promoting livable communities, preserving natural areas and resources – is enhanced with effective land use and transportation coordination.”
