Road Watch Report in Manatee and Sarasota

Motorists are reminded to wear safety belts and drive with caution, courtesy, common sense, and patience as they travel through work zones. Remember, speeding fines are doubled in work zones.

MANATEE COUNTY

Ellenton Gillette Road at 69th Street East: Construction project: Crews are constructing new left-turn lanes on Ellenton Gillette Road and 69th Street E; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk; signal upgrades, and new signing. Expect daytime lane closures from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and flagging operations when crews begin construction of the turn-lanes. Expected completion is early 2018. Coastal Bridge Company is the contractor.

I-275 at the Sunshine Skyway Rest Areas in Manatee and Pinellas counties: Construction Project: The Pinellas County Skyway Rest Area will close on Monday, September 18, 2017 ahead of construction beginning. During this time, motorists will be directed to the Manatee County Skyway Rest Area. The closure is expected to last until fall 2018. The fishing piers will remain open during the closure.

I-75 (SR 93) / University Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)

Sarasota/Bradenton:  Construction Project:

Construction activities at the interchange of I-75/University Parkway are suspended through Monday, October 2, 2017 due to the World Rowing Championship taking place in Sarasota County. Lane closures are not anticipated.

Benderson Development Company, in coordination with Sarasota County, is installing brick pavers at the intersection of University Parkway and Cattlemen Road, pending weather. This work requires temporary intermittent lane closures on University Parkway and Cattlemen Road during daytime and nighttime hours. Expected completion is late September. Expect delays.

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of constructing a diverging diamond interchange, adding an auxiliary lane on northbound and southbound I-75, constructing new bridges on  I-75 over University Parkway, widening of University Parkway, widening of I-75 bridges over Errie Creek and Foley Creek, realignment of on-ramps and off-ramps at I-75/University Parkway, addition of ponds, drainage improvements, new lighting and signalization, construction of a noise wall on the west side of I-75, sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways. I-75 from Moccasin Wallow Road to the Hillsborough County Line: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing I-75, making drainage improvements, installing guardrail, and adding new signage and pavement markings. The pavement along Moccasin Wallow Road at the I-75 interchange is also being reconstructed. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. AJAX Paving Industries of Florida, LLC, is the contractor. Expected completion is summer 2018.

I-75 at SR 64/Manatee Avenue Interchange: Construction project: This project reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64. This week, crews will work on piers and drainage. 

  • Motorists should expect lane closures on I-75 during nighttime/overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the duration of the construction.

Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late of 2019. The contractor is Prince Contracting LLC.

US 301 at the Hernando Desoto Bridge: Construction project: Crews are installing pile jackets, making concrete repairs and repairing the bridge fender system. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. The portion of Riverwalk under the bridge along the seawall is now open. Inland Construction and Engineering, Inc., is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

US 301 from Erie/Old Tampa Road to Moccasin Wallow Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. No lane closures are expected but motorists should be aware of crews working along the roadway through Friday, September 22. Use caution while in the area.

SR 789/Gulf Drive from SR 64/Manatee Avenue to SR 684/Cortez Road: Maintenance permit project: Manatee County is installing new force mains and water mains. For additional information about the project, please visit the project website at www.amipipereplacement.com.

SR 684 from 92nd Lane to 82nd Street West: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. Expect intermittent east and westbound lane closures through Friday, September 29. Use caution and expect possible delays.

SR 70 from 301 Boulevard to Tara Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway and making signal upgrades. Expect daytime and/or nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. Expected completion is late summer 2017. The contractor is Superior Asphalt, Inc.

SR 64 East near the Wauchula Myakka River Bridge: Maintenance contract project: Crews are cleaning ditches along the north side of the road (eastbound direction). No lane closures are expected between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. but motorists should be aware of crews working through late September 2017 and use caution.

 

SARASOTA COUNTY

Laurel Road at the Legacy Trail Crossing: Utility project: Utility contractors are relocating underground utilities in advance of construction on the new Legacy Trail pedestrian overpass. Traffic is down to a single lane in each direction. Westbound traffic has been shifted into the closed eastbound lane.

Business US 41 at the Circus Drawbridge: Construction project: Crews are improving mechanical equipment; painting structural steel; making spall repairs, and replacing portions of sidewalk. Traffic has shifted to the northbound bridge (one lane for each direction) while crews are working on the opposite bridge. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph during construction. Southern Road and Bridge, LLC is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.

US 41/Venice By-Pass from Gulf Coast Boulevard to Bird Bay Drive: Construction project: Crews continue installing utility and storm drain systems and constructing temporary pavement. Expect intermittent nighttime/overnight northbound and southbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. throughout the project limits while crews are working. Motorists should be mindful of the construction signs in place and traffic control officers and use caution while traveling through the project area. Bergeron Land Development is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway; installing new drainage; installing highway lighting, curb and gutter; constructing new sidewalk, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on US 41; US 301; Fruitville Road, and Orange Avenue while crews are working. Crews are constructing a new right turn-lane from northbound US 41 to Fruitville Road. Once constructed, the existing right turn-lane will be closed to traffic. Crews will then construct a pedestrian island and improve drainage. Nighttime/overnight northbound outside lane closures are also expected from 9 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. each morning while crews are working. Preferred Materials, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017. 

US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect daytime lane closures for barrier wall installation within the medians. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. Russell Engineering, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

US 41 from SR 789 Gulfstream Boulevard to the Ringling Bridge: Maintenance contracts project: Crews are cleaning storm sewer pipes, curb inlets and manholes. Expect nighttime/overnight intermittent lane closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. through late September. Use caution and expect possible delays.

US 41 Roundabouts at 10th Street and 14th Street, Sarasota:  Construction Project:

Utility workers are on-site locating existing utilities. Lane closures are not anticipated at this time.

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of reconstructing the signalized intersections and replacing them with roundabouts, enhancing connectivity, circulation and safety. US 41 will be widened between the two intersections and will include bike lanes as well as dedicated turn lanes, a 10-foot sidewalk along the west side, and a 6-foot sidewalk along the east side. Other improvements include raised islands for pedestrian refuge at the intersections of US 41 at 10th Street and 14th Street, pedestrian signals, LED street lights, landscaping and City of Sarasota utility and underground drainage structure replacements. In addition, bus facilities will be enhanced to include bus landing pads, bus shelters, bus benches, bike racks, and a new bus bay adjacent to Centennial Park. Expected completion is spring 2020. The contractor is IBT Construction LLC.

SR 776/ N. Indiana Avenue south of Tangerine Woods Boulevard: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a driveway. Expect northbound outside lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, September 22. Use caution and expect possible delays.

SR 758/Bee Ridge Road/Osprey Avenue from Siesta Drive to Dunn Drive: Construction project:  Motorists can expect lane closures throughout the project while crews work on storm drainage testing, signage, miscellaneous concrete and other finish work as well as punch list items. Please stay alert for lane shifts within the project and exercise caution in those areas. Pay close attention to the traffic control devices. Driving through the traffic control devices and into the work zone is prohibited.  Be aware of slow moving construction equipment and plan additional travel time throughout the project.                                                                                                                

The project consists of significant drainage improvements, removing old asphalt and resurfacing the roadway, reconstructing sidewalk, and installing new signalization in some areas.  The project also includes construction of eleven (11) pedestrian refuge islands on Bee Ridge Road between Dunn Drive and US 41. Expected completion of the $17 million project is fall of 2017.

Below is the latest on State and Federal road closures.

FDOT bridge staff has inspected 536 bridges in SW Florida since the storm passed and have not identified any that need immediate repairs.   Water continues to rise in some inland areas and FDOT road and bridge staff will continue to monitor those areas closely.

  • Private insurance information, if available.

  • Check the status of your application and get updates by SMS or email.
  • Upload documents to support your application.

Another option for individuals, including those who use 711 relay or VRS, is to call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) while those who use TTY can call 1-800-462-7585. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. EDT seven days a week until further notice.
When an applicant registers, each receives a unique registration number. The registration number is important and should be written down and kept handy. Anyone who does not have a registration number is not yet registered.

Federal Assistance from Irma Damage | SBA loans for businesses

Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration are available to individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations. The loans can be used for loss and damages not fully covered by insurance.

Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via the SBA's secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is Nov. 9, 2017. The deadline to return economic injury applications is June 11, 2018.

Weekly Traffic Report for Manatee and Sarasota Counties

All work is subject to change due to Hurricane Irma.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is suspending work operations in all active construction zones statewide that would impact lanes used by motorists for evacuations. FDOT requires construction project contractors to have a hurricane plan. Safety is the top priority. Some operations that don’t impact motorists or roadway lanes can continue however, emphasis and focus of the contractor will be on securing materials and equipment at the project sites.

As a tropical event approaches, maintaining existing roads is essential. FDOT alerts staff and maintenance contractors; putting them on standby and adjusting schedules if necessary. Drainage structures are readied by removing debris from rights-of-way and along roadways. Fleet vehicles are fueled. Agreements with supply contractors are activated, for materials needed after the storm.

FDOT is holding teleconferences with districts and agency partners such as the Army Corps of Engineers, Water Management Districts, and Federal Highway Administration to ensure all infrastructure needs are met.

FDOT maintenance contractors have begun lowering high mast interstate lights in some areas.

Benderson Development Company, in coordination with Sarasota County, is installing brick pavers at the intersection of University Parkway and Cattlemen Road, pending weather. This work requires temporary intermittent lane closures on University Parkway and Cattlemen Road during daytime and nighttime hours. Expected completion is mid to late September. Expect delays.

Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place at night/overnight on northbound and southbound I-75 through Friday, September 16 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., pending weather. Double lane closures begin at 11 p.m. Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place at night/overnight on eastbound and westbound University Parkway from Cooper Creek Blvd. to Market St. and at the on and off-ramps of I-75 through Friday, September 16 from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., pending weather. Double lane closures begin at 10 p.m. The contractor is installing final friction course and final striping. Watch for trucks entering and leaving the highway and uneven pavement. Speeding fines double when workers are present.

Double lane closures begin at 10 p.m. The contractor is installing final friction course and final striping. Watch for trucks entering and leaving the highway and uneven pavement. Speeding fines double when workers are present.

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of constructing a diverging diamond interchange, adding an auxiliary lane on northbound and southbound I-75, constructing new bridges on  I-75 over University Parkway, widening of University Parkway, widening of I-75 bridges over Errie Creek and Foley Creek, realignment of on-ramps and off-ramps at I-75/University Parkway, addition of ponds, drainage improvements, new lighting and signalization, construction of a noise wall on the west side of I-75, sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways. Business US 41 from Palermo Place to Venice Avenue: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway, constructing new sidewalk and installing new bus pads. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. Estimated completion is late summer 2017. Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC is the contractor.

Business US 41 at the Circus Drawbridge: Construction project: Crews are improving mechanical equipment; painting structural steel; making spall repairs, and replacing portions of sidewalk. Traffic lanes on both bridges will be open in preparation of Hurricane Irma. Traffic has shifted to the northbound bridge (one lane for each direction) while crews are working on the opposite bridge. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph during construction. Southern Road and Bridge, LLC is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.

US 41/Venice By-Pass from Gulf Coast Boulevard to Bird Bay Drive: Construction project: Crews continue installing utility and storm drain systems and constructing temporary pavement. Expect intermittent nighttime/overnight northbound and southbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. throughout the project limits while crews are working. Motorists should be mindful of the construction signs in place and traffic control officers and use caution while traveling through the project area. Bergeron Land Development is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway; installing new drainage; installing highway lighting, curb and gutter; constructing new sidewalk, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on US 41; US 301; Fruitville Road, and Orange Avenue while crews are working. Crews are constructing a new right turn-lane from northbound US 41 to Fruitville Road. Once constructed, the existing right turn-lane will be closed to traffic. Crews will then construct a pedestrian island and improve drainage. Nighttime/overnight northbound outside lane closures are also expected from 9 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. each morning while crews are working. Preferred Materials, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017. 

US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect daytime lane closures for barrier wall installation within the medians. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. Russell Engineering, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

US 41 from SR 789 Gulfstream Boulevard to the Ringling Bridge: Maintenance contracts project: Crews are cleaning storm sewer pipes, curb inlets and manholes. Expect nighttime/overnight intermittent lane closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. through mid-September. Use caution and expect possible delays.

SR 776/ N. Indiana Avenue south of Tangerine Woods Boulevard: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a driveway. Expect northbound outside lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, September 15. Use caution and expect possible delays.

SR 758/Bee Ridge Road/Osprey Avenue from Siesta Drive to Dunn Drive: Construction project:  Motorists can expect lane closures throughout the project while crews work on storm drainage testing, signage, miscellaneous concrete and other finish work as well as punch list items. Please stay alert for lane shifts within the project and exercise caution in those areas. Pay close attention to the traffic control devices. Driving through the traffic control devices and into the work zone is prohibited.  Be aware of slow moving construction equipment and plan additional travel time throughout the project.                                                                                                                      

The project consists of significant drainage improvements, removing old asphalt and resurfacing the roadway, reconstructing sidewalk, and installing new signalization in some areas.  The project also includes construction of eleven (11) pedestrian refuge islands on Bee Ridge Road between Dunn Drive and US 41. Expected completion of the $17 million project is fall of 2017.

The Sarasota/Manatee MPO wants everyone to contribute to the updated DRAFT Public Participation Plan (PPP).

The PPP is the guide to involving the public in the MPO transportation planning process, major documents, projects, and programs.  To ensure that the MPO’s PPP is effective, the adopted 2013 PPP was carefully evaluated.  After the evaluation, recommendations were made for updating the PPP. 

The MPO wants to hear your input on the updated DRAFT PPP. If you have any comments or questions, please let us know by 5:00PM on Friday, October 13, 2017 when the official 45-day comment period closes.

Public Hearing Scheduled for the Cortez Bridge PD&E Study in Manatee County

Bartow, FL - The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District One, has scheduled a public hearing for the proposed improvements to State Road (SR 684) (Cortez Road Bridge) from SR 789 (Gulf Drive) to 123rd Street West in Manatee County, Florida. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, August 31, 2017, at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 6101 Cortez Road West, Bradenton, Florida. The hearing will begin as an informal open house at 5 p.m., with a formal presentation at 6 p.m. followed by a public oral comment period.

This hearing is being held to allow interested persons an opportunity to be informed and provide comments concerning the location; conceptual design; and social, economic, and environmental effects of the future repair or replacement of the Cortez Bridge on SR 684 in Manatee County. Replacement alternatives include a 35-foot vertical clearance drawbridge and a high-level fixed bridge within the existing corridor. A video presentation will explain the alternatives. 

The Type II Categorical Exclusion, along with other pertinent information developed by the Department, will be available for public review during regular business hours at the following locations: Island Branch Library, 5701 Marina Drive in Holmes Beach and Kirkwood Presbyterian Church office, 6101 Cortez Road West in Bradenton. These materials will also be available at the hearing site throughout the duration of the public hearing.

US 41 Intersection Improvements PD&E Study

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District One has initiated a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study to evaluate improvements at the intersections of US 41 at Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Way and Myrtle Street and develop context based bicycle/pedestrian facilities along US 41 from Dr. MLK Jr. Way to Myrtle Street in the City of Sarasota. This study will improve multi-modal accessibility along the corridor, provide a safe, convenient and attractive crossing for pedestrian and bicyclists and improve connectivity and circulation between the greater Downtown Sarasota area and the Bayfront area.

As part of this PD&E study, FDOT has implemented a Public Involvement Program.  The goal of this plan is to inform citizens of project and provide interested persons an opportunity to be involved in project development.  FDOT will hold public meetings and a formal public hearing to provide project information and to solicit public comment.  We will mail newsletters and flyers to elected and appointed officials, property owners, interested persons, and the news media in advance of the public workshop and hearing.  FDOT encourages all interested people to attend, ask questions, and express their views regarding the project and the information presented.  FDOT expects to complete this study by early 2019.

10th Ave Complete Streets Study - Visioning Workshop #2

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District One, is holding a second visioning workshop for the 10th Avenue Complete Streets Study from Riverside Drive to 17th Street West, in Manatee County. We invite you to attend the workshop from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at Palmetto Library, 923 6th Street West, Palmetto, Florida 34221. We’ve included a project and meeting location map below for your reference.

The workshop will include a PowerPoint presentation followed by open discussion. People attending the workshop may review project displays and aerial photographs, and speak one-on-one with project team members about the proposed improvements to 10th Avenue.

FDOT is sending notices to major stakeholders along the project corridor and other interested parties. FDOT welcomes and appreciates the community’s participation in the project. The workshop gives everyone an opportunity to express his or her views about the proposed improvements.

Last night the Palmetto CRA and Florida Department of Transportation held a visioning workshop for the community.  This workshop provided education on ‘Complete Streets’, as well as several design options for 10th Avenue ‘Complete Streets’ improvements.

What are complete streets?

A ‘Complete Streets’ Policy refers to the idea that our roads are not exclusively for freight movement and motorists.  ‘Complete Streets’ places an emphasis on the philosophy that our roads need to be designed for all users, of all ages, with all abilities.  Moreover, complete streets support healthy, walkable, livable, vibrant, thriving communities.  In 2014, Florida adopted a statewide 'Complete Streets' policy confirming, "… the Department will routinely plan, design, construct, reconstruct and operate a context-sensitive system of 'Complete Streets.' While maintaining safety and mobility, Complete Streets shall service the transportation needs of transportation system users of all ages and abilities, including but not limited to: cyclists, freight handlers, motorists, pedestrians, and transit riders."

Keeping this in mind, last night's visioning workshop was held in the Palmetto Library where citizens gathered to learn about improvements for 10th Avenue from Riverside Drive to 17th Street (Downtown Palmetto).  Each design presented to the community incorporated effective storm water drainage, car lanes, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, landscaping, etc.  Once FDOT finished presenting multiple options, community members asked important questions regarding the assorted designs, as well as potential community impacts. Additionally, people shared their aspirations for 10th avenue, helping to shape the outcome of this project.  

After a period for people to make their comments, concerns, and questions heard, FDOT project team members asked the attendees to complete a survey.  The survey consists of 16 questions and asks what you like and don’t like about certain details regarding the improvements.  Using 5th Ave improvements as an example of the process, FDOT, Palmetto CRA, the Sarasota/Manatee MPO, and all those involved in the project want to know your thoughts, opinions, suggestions, comments, concerns, etc.  Your participation in this process helps to shape a feasible design that incorporates what the community wants before anything else.  Please make sure to take the survey if you want to help shape the future of Downtown Palmetto.

Public Comments Welcome on Draft 2017/18-2021/22 Transportation Improvement Program

Every year the Sarasota/Manatee MPO updates the 5 Year Transportation Improvement Program, or TIP, and the new draft TIP covering fiscal years 2017/18--2021/22 is now avilable for public review and comment.

Background: The process to develop the 2017/18--2021/22 TIP started in June 2016 when the MPO Board adopted its 2016 Project Priority List.  That list was forwarded to FDOT to prepare its Draft Tentative Five Year Work Program which includes roadway improvements, transportation alternatives, bridge, safety and public transportation projects (i.e. transit, aviation, port, intermodal and transportation disadvantaged program projects).

At the October 2016 MPO Board meeting, FDOT presented the Draft Tentative Five Year Work Program that addressed the priorities that were set by the MPO Board in June 2016.  The 2017/18-2021/22 Draft Tentative Five Year Work Program is then incorporated into the FY 2017/18-2021/22 Transportation Improvement Program. The TIP will be presented to the MPO Board at their next MPO Board meeting on June 19, 2017. The TIP must be submitted to FDOT by July 15, 2017.

Cyclovia Bradenton is on Sunday!

This Sunday, March 26 from 10am-2pm, 57th Ave West between 26th Street West and 34th Street West near SCF will be closed to vehicle traffic and opened up for people to bike, skate, scooter, walk, and dance for the first ever Cyclovia Bradenton. A bicycle route around the campus will be marked off and the event is completely free and open to the public. There will be music, Zumba class, group bicycle rides on the bicycle route, food trucks, and more!

What is a Cyclovia? Cyclovia is a spanish term for "Cycle way," and is also known as "Open Streets." Communities around the world have been holding these types of events where a selected street is closed to vehicle traffic so that pedestrians and bicyclists get to use the road to improve their health and experience a safe, car-free environment. 

MPO staff will be at Cyclovia Bradenton on Sunday with our bicycles, and we will also have a table where we will be distributing bicycle lights, water bottle cozies, reflective wrist bands, materials about bicycle and pedestrian safety. Please come join us!

Amendments Proposed for FY 2015/16--2019/2020 Transportation Improvement Program

These amendments brought forward by the Florida Department of Transportation request changes to the following projects:

  • FPN #201032-6 I-75 at SR 64 in Manatee County: $50,933,303 in State funds advance into FY 2017. The project length is being increased from .807 miles to 2.476 miles.
  • FPN #435349-1 US 41 Green Bridge Multi-Use Path in Manatee County: Environmental phase added in FY 2016 and FY 2018.
  • FPN #438374-1 US 41 from 301 Boulevard to 21st Avenue in Manatee County: New Safety project in FY 2017.
  • FPN #433550-1 US 41 from Blackburn Point Road to Stickney Point Road in Sarasota County: Environmental phase added in FY 2016 and FY 2017. The project length is being increased from 3.906 miles to 6.343 miles.
  • FPN #433552-1 US 41 from Sumter Blvd to Ortiz Blvd in Sarasota County: Environmental phase added in FY 2017.
  • FPN #433608-2 Myrtle Street in Sarasota County: Environmental Phase added in FY 2017 and FY 2018.

  • FPN #438371-1 US 301 from Fruitville Rd to 10th St: Environmental Phase added in FY 2017.
  • FPN #438959-1-84-01 FTA Section 5310- Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Persons with Disabilities- Operating in the amount of $156,981 with a local match of $156,981 as this project has been selected during the competitive application process for funding. The funds were apportioned to the state in FFY 2015 and were programmed late in the state FY 15/16.

These projects are required to be listed correctly in the Sarasota/Manatee Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) in order to ensure we receive federal authorization for the use of federal funds.

If approved by the MPO Board at the June 27, 2016 board meeting, the listed projects will be added in the currently adopted FY 2015/16--2019/2020 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

Draft 5 Year Transportation Improvement Program for 2016/17--2020/21 Available for Public Review and Comment

It's that time of year again! Every year the Sarasota/Manatee MPO updates the 5 Year Transportation Improvement Program, or TIP, and the new draft TIP covering fiscal years 2016/17--2020/21 is now avilable for public review and comment.

Background: The process to develop the 2016/17--2020/21 TIP started in March 2015 when the MPO Board adopted its 2015 Project Priority List.  That list was forwarded to FDOT to prepare its Draft Tentative Five Year Work Program which includes roadway improvements, transportation alternatives, bridge, safety and public transportation projects (i.e. transit, aviation, port, intermodal and transportation disadvantaged program projects).

At the December 2015 MPO Board meeting, FDOT presented the Draft Tentative Five Year Work Program that addressed the priorities that were set by the MPO Board in March 2015.  The 2016/17-2020/21 Draft Tentative Five Year Work Program is incorporated into the FY 2016/17-2020/21 Transportation Improvement Program. The TIP will go before the MPO Boad for adoption at their next MPO Board meeting on June 27, 2016. The TIP must be submitted to FDOT by July 15, 2016.

Central Manatee Network Alternatives Analysis Mobility Survey

The Florida Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization and the cities of Bradenton and Palmetto, is gathering information on transportation issues in Bradenton and Palmetto as part of the Central Manatee Network Alternatives Analysis (CMNAA).  The CMNAA study will aid in the development of future alternative transportation projects and programs designed to improve access to jobs, schools, shopping, and social services.  

We are conducting a mobility survey as a key component of our data collection effort.  The survey period is from January 4, 2016 through January 22, 2016. It is intended to gather information from those travelling in and through the study area.  Survey input will assist us in identifying vehicular mobility and safety concerns, as well as, learn about safety, comfort, and access issues associated with walking, biking, or using transit.  The survey will also help identify how these issues impact residents and businesses within the cities of Bradenton and Palmetto.

The survey will only take a few minutes to complete. The bi-lingual survey can be filled out on-line at:  http://www.swflroads.com/study/CMNAA. You are welcome forward the survey information to anyone you feel may be interested in participating in the survey.

Manatee accepting applications for vacancies on MPO Citizen Advisory Committee

MANATEE COUNTY, FL (January 7, 2015) – Manatee County has two openings for the Citizen Advisory Committee that makes recommendations to the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Board on regional transportation issues.

The Committee (CAC) assists the Metropolitan Planning Organization by providing citizens’ views, attitudes and input to the transportation planning process. CAC members represent a cross section of the citizens of Sarasota and Manatee counties including the cities within the counties. CAC representatives are recommended for appointment by their respective units of local government and are appointed by the MPO Board.

There is one vacancy for an at-large representative from Manatee County, and one vacancy for an at-large, disabled representative. Applications may be found online at http://www.mymanatee.org/home/government/board-of-commissioners/advisory-boards.html

The group meets at 5 p.m. on the first Thursday of months in which an MPO meeting is scheduled, with some CAC meetings scheduled on an alternate Thursday due to holidays. NOTIFICATION IS GIVEN that the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), will hold a Public Transportation Task Force Meeting on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 8:15 a.m. at the Sarasota/Manatee MPO Office, 7632 15th Street East, Sarasota, Florida followed by a MPO Board Meeting at 9:30 a.m. to be held at the Holiday Inn, 8009 15th Street East, Sarasota, Florida and will consider and act upon at 9:45 a.m. or reasonably thereafter the following:

MPO Recognizes Outgoing Board Members for Service

On Monday October 27, 2014, the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization Board recognized Sarasota County Commissioners Joe Barbetta and Nora Patterson for their service on the Board. Commissioners Barbetta and Patterson each received a plaque, presented by MPO Board Chair and Manatee County Commissioner Larry Bustle, acknowledging their dedication to serving the regional transportation needs of Sarasota and Manatee Counties. 

Commissioner Barbetta served on the MPO Board representing Sarasota County since 2007. Commissioner Patterson served on the MPO since 1999, initially representing the City of Sarasota and then representing Sarasota County. She served as the Chair of the MPO Board in 2005, 2009, and 2013.

Outgoing City of Sarasota Commissioner Shannon Snyder's service on the MPO Board since 2012 was recognized with a plaque as well.
