Traffic Watch for Manatee and Sarasota Counties

MANATEE COUNTY

I-275 at the Sunshine Skyway Rest Areas in Manatee and Pinellas Counties: Construction project: Improvements include constructing new rest areas and new parking lots with LED lighting, seawall repairs and extending the seawall at the Manatee County rest area to accommodate a new picnic pavilion. The Pinellas County Skyway Rest Area is closed for renovations. During this time, motorists will be directed to the Manatee County Skyway Rest Area. The closure is expected to last until fall 2018. The fishing piers will remain open during the closure. The fishing pier access road will have intermittent one-lane closures during daytime hours only for installation of temporary barrier wall. Construction is on-going on the new rest area site and the seawall on the Manatee side, west of I-275. Expected completion of both rest areas is fall 2019. David Nelson Construction Company is the contractor.

I-275 Southbound Ramp to I-75 Northbound (Exit 228): Construction project: Crews are replacing the concrete bridge deck on the southbound I-275 ramp to northbound I-75. The I-275 southbound ramp to northbound I-75 is closed for approximately ten (10) months. Traffic is being detoured north on US 41/S Tamiami Trail to SR 674/E College Avenue in Hillsborough County. A temporary traffic signal has been installed on US 41 at the southbound I-275 exit. Periodic nighttime/overnight I-75 northbound/southbound and I-275 southbound lane closures beneath I-275 will occur during construction. There will be nighttime/overnight lane closures on the I-275 southbound ramp to I-75 southbound from 9 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. each morning Sunday, October 7 through Monday, October 15. Motorists should also expect nighttime/overnight southbound single lane closures on I-75 the week of Sunday, October 14, as needed. Use caution and watch for changes in the traffic pattern. Expected completion is summer 2019. Cone & Graham, Inc. is the contractor.

I-75 at SR 70 Interchange (Exit 217): Construction project: The construction includes rebuilding the SR 70 interchange from its existing partial cloverleaf design to a modified diamond interchange design with a single loop in the northwest quadrant, replacing the entrance and exit ramps, adding emergency stopping sites on the exit ramps, widening I-75 from north of University Parkway to south of SR 64, resurfacing SR 70 from east of Tara Boulevard to west of 87th Street E, and providing 6.5-foot buffered bike lane and 5-foot sidewalks with high-emphasis crosswalks along SR 70. This week, crews will install construction signage, erosion control devices, and setting up safety barriers.

  • Motorists should expect lane closures on I-75 during nighttime/overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the duration of the construction.

Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late of 2019. The contractor is Sacyr Construction USA, LLC.

I-75 at SR 64 (Manatee Avenue) Interchange (Exit 220): Construction project: This week, crews are currently widening northbound and southbound I-75 and performing ramp, grading, utility, and drainage work, and paving SR 64 and the new I-75 southbound to SR 64 off-ramp.

  • Motorists are advised that the new SR 64 ramp to northbound I-75 is scheduled to open Thursday, October 11th, weather permitting.
  • Motorists are advised that SR 64 will be paved during the overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and will require traffic on SR 64 to shift a lane.
  • Motorists are advised that one lane closure in each direction on SR 64 may occur during the overnight hours between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Motorists are advised that one lane closure in each direction on I-75 may occur during the overnight hours between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. throughout the duration of the project. 

This project reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64. Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late 2019. The contractor is Prince Contracting LLC.

I-75 at the University Parkway Interchange (Exit 213): Construction project: Crews are installing landscaping and irrigation systems at the I-75 and University Parkway interchange. Lane closures on I-75, if needed, will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Lane closures on University Parkway, if needed, will occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Estimated completion is spring 2019. The contractor is Frankie Valdez Company, Inc.

US 301 from CR 675 to Moccasin Wallow Road: Construction project: Crews are installing new landscaping, irrigation and welcome signs. Superior Landscaping & Lawn Services is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2018.

US 301 at Ellenton Gillette Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a turn-lane. Expect daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Thursday, October 11. Use caution and expect possible delays.

Business US 41 (9th Street W) at the Green Bridge; at 3rd Avenue W, and from 3rd Avenue W to SR 64 (Manatee Avenue): Construction project: Crews are constructing a multi-use path; constructing sidewalk; improving drainage; constructing turn lanes, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on Business US 41 (9th Street W) from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. The outside southbound lane on Business US 41 over the Green Bridge is closed to traffic while the contractor is working on the concrete barrier wall. For safety purposes, the lane will remain closed 24/7 for approximately two months. Please plan additional travel time. 3rd Avenue W at Business US 41 remains closed to traffic while crews make roadway improvements. Please follow the detour routes (below) and plan additional travel time. The closure is expected to be in effect for approximately four weeks.

  • Eastbound 3rd Avenue W: Take southbound Business US 41/9th Street W to SR 64/6th Avenue W and continue to 3rd Street W. From 3rd Street W, turn right onto 3rd Avenue W and continue eastbound.
  • Southbound Business US 41 to eastbound 3rd Avenue W: Take SR 64/6th Avenue W to 3rd Street W. From 3rd Street W, turn right onto 3rd Avenue W and continue eastbound.
  • Northbound Business US 41 to eastbound 3rd Avenue W: Take SR 64/6th Avenue W to 3rd Street W. From 3rd Street W, turn right onto 3rd Avenue W and continue eastbound.
  • Westbound 3rd Avenue W: Take southbound 3rd Street W or 7th Street W to SR 64/Manatee Avenue W and continue to Business US 41/9th Street W. From Business US 41, turn left onto 3rd Avenue W and continue westbound.

Estimated completion is spring 2019. The contractor is Gosalia Concrete Constructors, Inc.

US 41 between 37th Avenue W and 36th Avenue W: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a driveway. Expect intermittent northbound lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, October 12. Use caution and expect possible delays.

US 41 at 57th Avenue W: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a driveway. Expect daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Thursday, October 11. Use caution and expect possible delays.

SR 789/Gulf Drive from SR 64 (Manatee Avenue) to SR 684 (Cortez Road): Maintenance permit project: Manatee County is installing new force mains and water mains. For additional information about the project, please visit the project website at www.amipipereplacement.com.

SR 70 (15th Street E) at 9th Avenue E: Construction project: Crews are constructing a roundabout; installing highway lighting and landscaping; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and resurfacing the roadway. The intersection of SR 70 (15th Street E) and 9th Avenue E is closed to traffic for approximately six (6) months. Please use 13th Avenue E and 7th Avenue E as alternate routes during this time. A temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of SR 70 (15th Street E) and 13th Avenue E while the detour is in effect. Watson Civil Construction, Inc., is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

SR 64 from 67th Street W to 63rd Street W: Construction project: Crews are making drainage improvements, constructing sidewalk, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. C-Squared Certified General Contractor, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2018.

SARASOTA COUNTY

Laurel Road at the Legacy Trail Crossing: Construction project: Crews are constructing a pedestrian bridge along the Legacy Trail over Laurel Road. Please be aware of construction vehicles entering and leaving the construction zone. Both northbound and southbound trail traffic are now being detoured to the west along the signed detour route. Both sidewalks on the north and south side of Laurel Road are now closed. Please follow detour signs provided. Intermittent single lane closures at the bridge can be expected from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays only. Denson Construction, Inc. is the contractor for the bridge. Expected completion is fall 2018.

US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.

US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. Expect periodic driveway closures along the northbound lanes while crews are installing drainage systems. Russell Engineering, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

US 41 Roundabouts at 10th Street and 14th Street, Sarasota: Construction project: Crews continue work within the right-of-way, medians and driveways.

  • Temporary single lane closures may occur between 9th Street and 15th Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. if nighttime activities are scheduled.
  • A temporary street closure at 10th Street (west side only) is scheduled for October 6th thru October 8th. Motorists may use Boulevard of the Arts as an alternate route to access 10th Street. Detour signs will be installed to route the traffic going to/from businesses via Boulevard of the Arts.
  • Grading and new driveway installation on the east side of US 41 on 14th Street is scheduled for next week. Individual home owners impacted by these activities will be contacted to coordinate.
  • Installation of concrete traffic railing is expected at Hog Creek, northwest side of US 41 and 11th Street. Watch for heavy equipment and concrete trucks moving in and out of travel lanes.
  • Light pole base foundations and preparation for sidewalks and driveways are scheduled for the north east corner of 14th Street and US 41 intersection. Expect heavy equipment, concrete and dump trucks and power tools. Pedestrian paths may also be rearranged to accommodate work in this area.
  • Installation of waterline across US 41 at 10th Street is complete. Activity in the area will be for waterline testing prior to activation. All work is expected during the day time. The contractor’s work zone for this operation will be in the median of 10th Street east of US 41. Motorists are urged to use caution and be mindful of the workers and the heavy equipment moving in and out of this area.
  • West bound 10th Street will have restricted lanes on the east side of US 41, only 2 lanes will be available to make left turns, through traffic and right turns. Heavy equipment will be staged in the median, with large trucks moving in and out of the median. Motorists are urged to use caution in the area.
  • Centennial Park Boat Ramp driveway on 10th Street will be closed. Motorists can access the boat ramp via the US 41 entrance. Northbound left turn lane from US 41 into the boat ramp is available.
  • Pedestrian paths have been reconfigured around the work zone, please use designated sidewalks and cross walks. No pedestrian access on the west side of US 41 beyond Centennial Park, pedestrians are advised to use the sidewalk on the east side of US 41. Impacts to pedestrian access south of the Centennial Park on the west side of US 41 is expected while the contractor is performing excavation in the area.
  • Box culvert construction is ongoing. This is an active construction zone and for safety purposes only authorized personnel are allowed inside the work zone.
  • The traffic pattern will be limited to right turn in/out for 11th, 12th and 13th Street. Traveling southbound and northbound direction left turns are not permitted at 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th Streets. Motorists are advised to follow the posted signs.
  • Temporary detour route in effect. Use Cocoanut Avenue as alternate route to access 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Street. Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour route and seek an alternate route while traveling in this area.
  • Speed limit is reduced to 30 mph. Speeding fines are doubled in the construction area when workers are present.

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of reconstructing the signalized intersections and replacing them with roundabouts, enhancing connectivity, circulation and safety. US 41 will be widened between the two intersections and will include bike lanes as well as dedicated turn lanes, a 10-foot sidewalk along the west side, and a 6-foot sidewalk along the east side. Other improvements include raised islands for pedestrian refuge at the intersections of US 41 at 10th Street and 14th Street, pedestrian signals, LED street lights, landscaping, and City of Sarasota utility and underground drainage structure replacements. Expected completion is spring 2020. The contractor is IBT Construction LLC.

US 41 from Hospital Road to River Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing new turn-lanes, driveway connections, and working in the medians. Expect intermittent north and southbound daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, October 26. Use caution and expect possible delays.

US 41 from McIntosh Road to Beneva Road: Construction project: Crews are constructing sidewalk and bicycle lanes, improving drainage, reconstructing the US 41 southbound bridge over Catfish Creek south of Central Sarasota Parkway, installing highway lighting, upgrading signals, and installing new signing and pavement markings.

TRAFFIC SWITCH – Beginning Sunday, October 7 at 6 p.m. southbound US 41 traffic will be reduced to one lane and shifted into one of the northbound lanes while construction is underway on the southbound Catfish Creek Bridge. Northbound US 41 will also be reduced to one lane to accommodate southbound traffic. This traffic pattern will be in effect for approximately five (5) months. Use caution and plan additional travel time.

  • Northbound nighttime/overnight lane closures may occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Southbound nighttime/overnight lane closures may occur between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 a.m.
  • The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph within the construction zone.

Motorists should use caution and obey the posted speed limit. Expected completion is fall 2019. The contractor is Morrison-Cobalt JV.

US 41 from Tuscola Boulevard to Ortiz Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are constructing a multi-use path; installing bus pads and shelters; improving drainage; constructing/replacing sidewalk; installing guardrail and highway lighting, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Daytime lane closures between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. are possible. Lane closures within 600 feet of signalized intersections are not permitted between 5:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Florida Safety Contractors, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

SR 758 (Bee Ridge Road) from Bond Place to Cattleman Road: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway, constructing sidewalk, improving drainage, and upgrading traffic signals and highway lighting. Expect nighttime/overnight single-lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. Ajax Paving Industries of Florida is the contractor. Expected completion is late fall 2018.

SR 72 at Gateway Road: Construction project: This project is to replacing existing crosswalks, crosswalk landings, pedestrian signals, and lighting. This week, crews will work on site clean-up and punch list items.

  • Drivers should anticipate lane closures; however, lane closures will be prohibited during peak hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

MANATEE COUNTY

Ellenton Gillette Road at 69th Street East: Construction project: Crews are constructing new left-turn lanes on Ellenton Gillette Road and 69th Street E; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk; signal upgrades, and new signing. Expect daytime lane closures from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and flagging operations when crews begin construction of the turn-lanes. Expected completion is early 2018. Coastal Bridge Company is the contractor.

I-275 at the Sunshine Skyway Rest Areas in Manatee and Pinellas counties: Construction Project: Improvements include constructing new rest areas and new parking lots with LED lighting, seawall repairs and extending the seawall at the Manatee County rest area to accommodate a new picnic pavilion. The Pinellas County Skyway Rest Area is closed for renovations. During this time, motorists will be directed to the Manatee County Skyway Rest Area. The closure is expected to last until fall 2018. The fishing piers will remain open during the closure. A nighttime short duration lane closure is expected on I-275 northbound for sign adjustments. Expected completion is fall 2019. David Nelson Construction Company is the contractor.  

 I-75 (SR 93) / University Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)

Sarasota/Bradenton:  Construction Project:

 Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place during the night/overnight on eastbound and westbound University Parkway from Cooper Creek Blvd. to Market Street Sunday, November 19 through Tuesday, November 21 between the hours of 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. Double lane closures begin at 11 p.m.

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, construction activities are suspended Wednesday, November 22 through Sunday, November 26.

Watch for trucks entering and leaving the highway. Construction activities are subject to change at any time pending weather and schedule changes. Motorists are reminded to wear safety belts and drive with caution, courtesy, common sense, and patience when traveling through work zones.

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of constructing a diverging diamond interchange, adding an auxiliary lane on northbound and southbound I-75, constructing new bridges on  I-75 over University Parkway, widening of University Parkway, widening of I-75 bridges over Errie Creek and Foley Creek, realignment of on-ramps and off-ramps at I-75/University Parkway, addition of ponds, drainage improvements, new lighting and signalization, construction of a noise wall on the west side of I-75, sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways. I-75 from Moccasin Wallow Road to the Hillsborough County Line: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing I-75, making drainage improvements, installing guardrail, and adding new signage and pavement markings. The pavement along Moccasin Wallow Road at the I-75 interchange is also being reconstructed. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. AJAX Paving Industries of Florida, LLC, is the contractor. Expected completion is summer 2018.

 I-75 at SR 64/Manatee Avenue Interchange: Construction project: This project

reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64. Crews are currently excavating for ponds, installing drainage, relocating utilities, bridge piers, and ramp work.           

  • On Sunday, November 19, crews will shift traffic to a temporary ramp for I-75 southbound.  Drivers are urged to use caution during the new ramp traffic pattern.
  • Motorists should expect the I-75 northbound exit (Exit 220A) CLOSED until late Summer 2018 for crews to reconstruct the ramp, weather permitting. Motorists must use Exit 220B to reach eastbound or westbound SR 64/Manatee Avenue.
  • Motorists should expect southbound I-75 lanes shifted to the temporary lanes constructed toward the median.
  • Crews will not work during the Thanksgiving holiday period; therefore, no work will occur from overnight Wednesday, November 22 through Sunday, November 26th.

Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late 2019. The contractor is Prince Contracting LLC.

US 301 from Erie/Old Tampa Road to Moccasin Wallow Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. No lane closures are expected but motorists should be aware of crews working along the roadway through Friday, December 1. Use caution while in the area. 

 

US 301 from CR 675 to Moccasin Wallow Road: Construction project: Crews are installing new landscaping, irrigation and welcome signs. Superior Landscaping & Lawn Services is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

 SR 789/Gulf Drive from SR 64/Manatee Avenue to SR 684/Cortez Road: Maintenance permit project: Manatee County is installing new force mains and water mains. For additional information about the project, please visit the project website at www.amipipereplacement.com. 

 SR 789/Gulf Drive in Bradenton Beach: Construction project: Crews are installing a sidewalk along SR 789/Gulf Drive from just south of 13th Street South to the North Coquina Beach Boat Ramp.  This week, crews will be working on final punch list items and site cleanup.  Watch for daytime lane closures and be alert for flaggers.  The lane closures are necessary during the daytime hours to comply with sea turtle nesting lighting restrictions.  The contractor is Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC. Expected completion is late 2017.

SR 684 from 92nd Lane to 82nd Street West: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. Expect intermittent east and westbound lane closures through Friday, December 1. Use caution and expect possible delays.  

 SR 684/Cortez Road at 119th Street West in Cortez: Construction project: Crews

will construct interim intersection safety improvements, including median, pedestrian signal, and lane striping work.  This week, crews will be working on signal work, concrete median, and preparing for punch list items.  Motorists should expect lane closures during the daytime or nighttime hours; therefore, drivers should use caution while traveling in this area.  Crews will not be working during the Thanksgiving holiday; therefore no work will be performed from the evening of Wednesday, November 22 through Sunday, November 26.  The contractor is Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC. Expected completion is late 2017.

SR 70 from 301 Boulevard to Tara Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway and making signal upgrades. Construction operations are still underway including asphalt paving, signal work, roadway striping, installation of permanent signing, and concrete curb and sidewalk construction. Expect nighttime signal work at various intersections and new sign locations. Resurfacing towards the east end of the project from Braden River to Tara Boulevard continues Sunday through Thursday nights. Expected completion is fall 2017. The contractor is Superior Asphalt, Inc. 

 SR 64 at 46th Street West: Maintenance contracts project: Crews are reconstructing the sidewalk and driveway connections. Expect possible daytime eastbound outside lane closures while crews are working.

 

SARASOTA COUNTY

 Laurel Road at the Legacy Trail Crossing: Construction project: Crews are constructing a pedestrian bridge along the Legacy Trail over Laurel Road. Utility contractors are relocating underground utilities in advance of construction. Traffic is down to a single lane in each direction. Westbound traffic has been shifted into the closed eastbound lane. Please be aware of construction vehicles entering and leaving the construction zone. Denson Construction, Inc. is the contractor for the bridge. Spectrum Underground is the contractor for the roadway. Expected completion is Fall 2018.

Sarasota/Bradenton:  Construction Project:

 Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place during the night/overnight on eastbound and westbound University Parkway from Cooper Creek Blvd. to Market Street Sunday, November 19 through Tuesday, November 21 between the hours of 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. Double lane closures begin at 11 p.m.

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, construction activities are suspended Wednesday, November 22 through Sunday, November 26.

Watch for trucks entering and leaving the highway. Construction activities are subject to change at any time pending weather and schedule changes. Motorists are reminded to wear safety belts and drive with caution, courtesy, common sense, and patience when traveling through work zones.

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of constructing a diverging diamond interchange, adding an auxiliary lane on northbound and southbound I-75, constructing new bridges on  I-75 over University Parkway, widening of University Parkway, widening of I-75 bridges over Errie Creek and Foley Creek, realignment of on-ramps and off-ramps at I-75/University Parkway, addition of ponds, drainage improvements, new lighting and signalization, construction of a noise wall on the west side of I-75, sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways. US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.

US 41/Venice By-Pass from Gulf Coast Boulevard to Bird Bay Drive: Construction project: Crews continue installing utility and storm drain systems and constructing temporary pavement. Expect intermittent nighttime/overnight northbound and southbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. throughout the project limits while crews are working. Motorists should also be aware of upcoming nighttime/overnight traffic shifts. Motorists should be mindful of the construction signs in place and traffic control officers and use caution while traveling through the project area. Bergeron Land Development is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

 US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway; installing new drainage; installing highway lighting, curb and gutter; constructing new sidewalk, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on US 41; US 301; Fruitville Road, and Orange Avenue while crews are working. Crews are constructing a new right turn-lane from northbound US 41 to Fruitville Road. Once constructed, the existing right turn-lane will be closed to traffic. Crews will then construct a pedestrian island and improve drainage. Nighttime/overnight northbound outside lane closures are also expected from 9 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. each morning while crews are working. Preferred Materials, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017. 

US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect daytime lane closures for roadway widening area adjacent to the medians. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. Russell Engineering, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

 US 41 Roundabouts at 10th Street and 14th Street, Sarasota:  Construction Project:

Crews continue mobilizing construction equipment, installing construction Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) signs, clearing within the right-of-way, and installing silt fence for erosion control. Motorists should expect temporary daytime lane closures for crews working in the medians.

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of reconstructing the signalized intersections and replacing them with roundabouts, enhancing connectivity, circulation and safety. US 41 will be widened between the two intersections and will include bike lanes as well as dedicated turn lanes, a 10-foot sidewalk along the west side, and a 6-foot sidewalk along the east side. Other improvements include raised islands for pedestrian refuge at the intersections of US 41 at 10th Street and 14th Street, pedestrian signals, LED street lights, landscaping and City of Sarasota utility and underground drainage structure replacements. Expected completion is spring 2020. The contractor is IBT Construction LLC.

 US 41 from Hospital Road to River Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing new turn-lanes, driveway connections, and working in the medians. Expect intermittent north and southbound daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, December 29. Use caution and expect possible delays.

 SR 758/Bee Ridge Road/Osprey Avenue from Siesta Drive to Dunn Drive: Construction project:  As the project nears completion, motorists can expect intermittent lane closures throughout the project while crews continue finish work including final paving, repair work, signage, signals, miscellaneous concrete and punch list items.

Please stay alert and exercise caution throughout the project. Pay close attention to the traffic control devices. Driving through the traffic control devices and into the work zone is prohibited.  Be aware of slow moving construction equipment and plan additional travel time throughout the project.                                                                                                                    

The project consists of significant drainage improvements, removing old asphalt and resurfacing the roadway, reconstructing sidewalk, and installing new signalization in some areas.  The project also includes construction of eleven (11) pedestrian refuge islands on Bee Ridge Road between Dunn Drive and US 41. Expected completion of the $17 million project is late fall 2017.

SR 72/Clark Road in Sarasota County: Construction project: Crews will install guardrail and associated drainage improvements along stormwater pond just west of Proctor Road on the north side of SR 72.  This week, crews will be mobilizing for the project.  Motorists should expect lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. on SR 72.  Flaggers will be present.  Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. The contractor is Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC. Expected completion is late 2017.

Ellenton Gillette Road at 69th Street East: Construction project: Crews are constructing new left-turn lanes on Ellenton Gillette Road and 69th Street E; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk; signal upgrades, and new signing. Expect daytime lane closures from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and flagging operations when crews begin construction of the turn-lanes. Expected completion is early 2018. Coastal Bridge Company is the contractor.

I-275 at the Sunshine Skyway Rest Areas in Manatee and Pinellas counties: Construction Project: Improvements include constructing new rest areas and new parking lots with LED lighting, seawall repairs and extending the seawall at the Manatee County rest area to accommodate a new picnic pavilion. The Pinellas County Skyway Rest Area is closed for renovations. During this time, motorists will be directed to the Manatee County Skyway Rest Area. The closure is expected to last until fall 2018. The fishing piers will remain open during the closure. A nighttime short duration lane closure is expected on I-275 northbound for sign adjustments. Expected completion is fall 2019. The pavement along Moccasin Wallow Road at the I-75 interchange is also being reconstructed. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. AJAX Paving Industries of Florida, LLC, is the contractor. Expected completion is summer 2018.

I-75 at SR 64/Manatee Avenue Interchange: Construction project: This project reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64. Crews are currently excavating for ponds, installing drainage, relocating utilities, and ramp work.           

  • Motorists should expect the I-75 northbound exit (Exit 220A) CLOSED until late Summer 2018 for crews to reconstruct the ramp, weather permitting. Motorists must use Exit 220B to reach eastbound or westbound SR 64/Manatee Avenue.
  • Motorists should expect southbound I-75 lanes shifted to the temporary lanes constructed toward the median.

Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late 2019. The contractor is Prince Contracting LLC.

US 301 from Erie/Old Tampa Road to Moccasin Wallow Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. No lane closures are expected but motorists should be aware of crews working along the roadway through Friday, November 17. Use caution while in the area.  

US 301 from CR 675 to Moccasin Wallow Road: Construction project: Crews are installing new landscaping, irrigation and welcome signs. Superior Landscaping & Lawn Services is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

 

SR 789/Gulf Drive from SR 64/Manatee Avenue to SR 684/Cortez Road: Maintenance permit project: Manatee County is installing new force mains and water mains. For additional information about the project, please visit the project website at www.amipipereplacement.com. 

 SR 789/Gulf Drive in Bradenton Beach: Construction project: Crews are installing a sidewalk along SR 789/Gulf Drive from just south of 13th Street South to the North Coquina Beach Boat Ramp.  This week, crews will be working on sidewalk installation and drainage.  Watch for daytime lane closures and be alert for flaggers.  The lane closures are necessary during the daytime hours to comply with sea turtle nesting lighting restrictions.  The contractor is Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC. Expected completion is late 2017.

SR 684 from 92nd Lane to 82nd Street West: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. Expect intermittent east and westbound lane closures through Friday, November 17. Use caution and expect possible delays.  

 SR 684/Cortez Road at 119th Street West in Cortez: Construction project:

Crews will construct interim intersection safety improvements, including median, pedestrian signal, and lane striping work.  This week, crews will be mobilizing for the project.  Motorists should expect lane closures during the daytime or nighttime hours; therefore, drivers should use caution while traveling in this area The contractor is Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC. Expected completion is late 2017.

SR 70 from 301 Boulevard to Tara Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway and making signal upgrades. Construction operations are still underway including asphalt paving, signal work, roadway striping, installation of permanent signing, and concrete curb and sidewalk construction. Expect nighttime signal work at various intersections and new sign locations. Resurfacing towards the east end of the project from Braden River to Tara Boulevard continues Sunday through Thursday nights. Expected completion is fall 2017. The contractor is Superior Asphalt, Inc. 

 SR 64 at 46th Street West: Maintenance contracts project: Crews are reconstructing the sidewalk and driveway connections. Expect possible daytime eastbound outside lane closures while crews are working.

Laurel Road at the Legacy Trail Crossing: Construction project: Crews are constructing a pedestrian bridge along the Legacy Trail over Laurel Road. Utility contractors are relocating underground utilities in advance of construction. Traffic is down to a single lane in each direction. Westbound traffic has been shifted into the closed eastbound lane. Denson Construction, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2018.

Expect nighttime/overnight southbound lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, October 19. Use caution and expect possible delays.

US 301 at the Hernando Desoto Bridge: Construction project: Crews are installing pile jackets, making concrete repairs and repairing the bridge fender system. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. The portion of Riverwalk under the bridge along the seawall is now open. Inland Construction and Engineering, Inc., is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

I-75 (SR 93) / University Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)

Sarasota/Bradenton:  Construction Project:

 Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place at night/overnight on eastbound and westbound University Parkway from Cooper Creek Blvd. to Market St. and at the on and off-ramps of I-75 Monday, October 9 through Friday, October 13 from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Double lane closures begin at 10 p.m. The contractor is installing final friction course and final striping. A single lane closure is in place at night/overnight on southbound I-75 Friday, October 13 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. while repairs are made to the noise wall. Watch for trucks entering and leaving the highway and uneven pavement. Speeding fines double when workers are present.

 Improvements being made as part of this project consist of constructing a diverging diamond interchange, adding an auxiliary lane on northbound and southbound I-75, constructing new bridges on  I-75 over University Parkway, widening of University Parkway, widening of I-75 bridges over Errie Creek and Foley Creek, realignment of on-ramps and off-ramps at I-75/University Parkway, addition of ponds, drainage improvements, new lighting and signalization, construction of a noise wall on the west side of I-75, sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways. Business US 41 at the Circus Drawbridge: Construction project: Crews are improving mechanical equipment; painting structural steel; making spall repairs, and replacing portions of sidewalk. Traffic has shifted to the northbound bridge (one lane for each direction) while crews are working on the opposite bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists are also restricted to the northbound bridge. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph during construction. Southern Road and Bridge, LLC is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

 US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.

 US 41/Venice By-Pass from Gulf Coast Boulevard to Bird Bay Drive: Construction project: Crews continue installing utility and storm drain systems and constructing temporary pavement. Expect intermittent nighttime/overnight northbound and southbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. throughout the project limits while crews are working. Motorists should be mindful of the construction signs in place and traffic control officers and use caution while traveling through the project area. Bergeron Land Development is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

 US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway; installing new drainage; installing highway lighting, curb and gutter; constructing new sidewalk, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on US 41; US 301; Fruitville Road, and Orange Avenue while crews are working. Crews are constructing a new right turn-lane from northbound US 41 to Fruitville Road. Once constructed, the existing right turn-lane will be closed to traffic. Crews will then construct a pedestrian island and improve drainage. Nighttime/overnight northbound outside lane closures are also expected from 9 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. each morning while crews are working. Preferred Materials, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017. 

US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect daytime lane closures for barrier wall installation within the medians. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. Russell Engineering, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

US 41 Roundabouts at 10th Street and 14th Street, Sarasota:  Construction Project:

Utility workers are on-site locating existing utilities. Improvements being made as part of this project consist of reconstructing the signalized intersections and replacing them with roundabouts, enhancing connectivity, circulation and safety. US 41 will be widened between the two intersections and will include bike lanes as well as dedicated turn lanes, a 10-foot sidewalk along the west side, and a 6-foot sidewalk along the east side. Other improvements include raised islands for pedestrian refuge at the intersections of US 41 at 10th Street and 14th Street, pedestrian signals, LED street lights, landscaping and City of Sarasota utility and underground drainage structure replacements. Expected completion is spring 2020. The contractor is IBT Construction LLC.

 SR 776/ N. Indiana Avenue south of Tangerine Woods Boulevard: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a driveway. Expect northbound outside lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, October 13. Use caution and expect possible delays.

 SR 758/Bee Ridge Road/Osprey Avenue from Siesta Drive to Dunn Drive: Construction project:  Motorists can expect lane closures throughout the project while crews continue project completion items including paving, storm drainage testing, signage, signal work, miscellaneous concrete and punch list items.

One to two westbound lanes on the north side of Bee Ridge Road between Bond Place and McIntosh may be closed next week and traffic will be shifted to the inside lane to accommodate additional pipe work that is added to the project in that area. 

Please stay alert and exercise caution throughout the project. Pay close attention to the traffic control devices. Driving through the traffic control devices and into the work zone is prohibited.  Be aware of slow moving construction equipment and plan additional travel time throughout the project.                                                                                                                  

The project consists of significant drainage improvements, removing old asphalt and resurfacing the roadway, reconstructing sidewalk, and installing new signalization in some areas.  The project also includes construction of eleven (11) pedestrian refuge islands on Bee Ridge Road between Dunn Drive and US 41. Expected completion of the $17 million project is late fall 2017.

SR 72 at the Stickney Point Drawbridge: Bridge maintenance project: Crews are working on the bridge. Expect westbound right lane closure from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, October 12. Use caution and expect possible delays.

I-75 at SR 64/Manatee Avenue Interchange: Construction project: This project reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64.

  • Motorists should expect the I-75 northbound exit (Exit 220A) CLOSED beginning at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11.  Motorists must use Exit 220B to reach eastbound or westbound SR 64/Manatee Avenue until further notice.
  • Motorists should expect northbound I-75 lanes to shift to the temporary lanes constructed toward the median during the nighttime/overnight hours on Sunday, October 8.
  • Motorists should expect southbound I-75 lanes to shift to the temporary lanes constructed toward the median during the nighttime/overnight hours on Sunday, October 15.

Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late of 2019. The contractor is Prince Contracting LLC.

Road Watch for Manatee and Sarasota Counties - Week of September 24, 2017

MANATEE COUNTY

Ellenton Gillette Road at 69th Street East: Construction project: Crews are constructing new left-turn lanes on Ellenton Gillette Road and 69th Street E; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk; signal upgrades, and new signing. Expect daytime lane closures from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and flagging operations when crews begin construction of the turn-lanes. Expected completion is early 2018. Coastal Bridge Company is the contractor.

 

I-275 at the Sunshine Skyway Rest Areas in Manatee and Pinellas counties: Construction Project: The Pinellas County Skyway Rest Area will close on Monday, October 2, 2017 ahead of construction beginning. During this time, motorists will be directed to the Manatee County Skyway Rest Area. The closure is expected to last until fall 2018. The fishing piers will remain open during the closure.

The pavement along Moccasin Wallow Road at the I-75 interchange is also being reconstructed. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. AJAX Paving Industries of Florida, LLC, is the contractor. Expected completion is summer 2018.

US 301 at the Hernando Desoto Bridge: Construction project: Crews are installing pile jackets, making concrete repairs and repairing the bridge fender system. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. The portion of Riverwalk under the bridge along the seawall is now open. Inland Construction and Engineering, Inc., is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

US 301 from Erie/Old Tampa Road to Moccasin Wallow Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. No lane closures are expected but motorists should be aware of crews working along the roadway through Friday, September 29. Use caution while in the area.

 

SR 789/Gulf Drive from SR 64/Manatee Avenue to SR 684/Cortez Road: Maintenance permit project: Manatee County is installing new force mains and water mains. For additional information about the project, please visit the project website at www.amipipereplacement.com.

 

SR 684 from 92nd Lane to 82nd Street West: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. Expect intermittent east and westbound lane closures through Friday, September 29. Use caution and expect possible delays.

 

SR 70 from 301 Boulevard to Tara Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway and making signal upgrades. Expect eastbound daytime and nighttime lane closures and median turn-lane closures on SR 70 between Natalie Way and Lockwood Ridge Road beginning Monday, September 25th while crews prepare for a pipe replacement by installing de-watering equipment. Plan on daytime and nighttime eastbound lane closures in the same area beginning Monday, October 2nd in order to remove and replace the underground storm pipe, weather permitting. Pipe replacement will take approximately three to four days with 24 hour continuous operations. Eastbound SR 70 may be reduced to one lane during this time. Motorists should expect delays, plan for additional travel time or find an alternate route. Expected completion is fall 2017. The contractor is Superior Asphalt, Inc.

SR 64 East near the Wauchula Myakka River Bridge: Maintenance contract project: Crews are cleaning ditches along the north side of the road (eastbound direction). No lane closures are expected between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. but motorists should be aware of crews working through late September 2017 and use caution.

SARASOTA COUNTY

 

Laurel Road at the Legacy Trail Crossing: Utility project: Utility contractors are relocating underground utilities in advance of construction on the new Legacy Trail pedestrian overpass. Traffic is down to a single lane in each direction. Westbound traffic has been shifted into the closed eastbound lane.

MPO Offices Closed Friday September 8, 2017

The Sarasota/Manatee MPO office will be closed on Friday, September 8 consistent with state of emergency declarations by both counties. We will be monitoring county government plans for reopening.
  • All meetings for Monday, September 11 have been cancelled including:
    • Technical Advisory Committee (TAC)
    • Island Transportation Planning Organization (ITPO)
    • Citizen’s Advisory Committee
  • The MPO Board will meet, as scheduled, on September 25, 9:30 am to address time sensitive material.

Sarasota/Bradenton:  Construction Project:

Benderson Development Company, in coordination with Sarasota County, is installing brick pavers at the intersection of University Parkway and Cattlemen Road. This work requires temporary intermittent lane closures on University Parkway and Cattlemen Road during daytime and nighttime hours. These activities are anticipated to last several weeks. Expect delays.

Construction activities are suspended Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4 in observance of Labor Day. Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place at night/overnight on northbound and southbound I-75 Tuesday, September 5 through Friday, September 8 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Double lane closures begin at 11 p.m. Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place at night/overnight on eastbound and westbound University Parkway from Cooper Creek Blvd. to Market St. and at the on and off-ramps of I-75 Tuesday, September 5 through Friday, September 8 from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Double lane closures begin at 10 p.m. The contractor is installing final friction course and final striping. Watch for trucks entering and leaving the highway and uneven pavement. Speeding fines double when workers are present.

 

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of constructing a diverging diamond interchange, adding an auxiliary lane on northbound and southbound I-75, constructing new bridges on  I-75 over University Parkway, widening of University Parkway, widening of I-75 bridges over Errie Creek and Foley Creek, realignment of on-ramps and off-ramps at I-75/University Parkway, addition of ponds, drainage improvements, new lighting and signalization, construction of a noise wall on the west side of I-75, sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways. Business US 41 at the Circus Drawbridge: Construction project: Crews are improving mechanical equipment; painting structural steel; making spall repairs, and replacing portions of sidewalk. Traffic has shifted to the northbound bridge (one lane for each direction) while crews are working on the opposite bridge. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph during construction. Southern Road and Bridge, LLC is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.

 

US 41/Venice By-Pass from Gulf Coast Boulevard to Bird Bay Drive: Construction project: Crews continue installing utility and storm drain systems and constructing temporary pavement. Expect intermittent nighttime/overnight northbound and southbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. throughout the project limits while crews are working. Motorists should be mindful of the construction signs in place and traffic control officers and use caution while traveling through the project area. Bergeron Land Development is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

 

US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway; installing new drainage; installing highway lighting, curb and gutter; constructing new sidewalk, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on US 41; US 301; Fruitville Road, and Orange Avenue while crews are working. Crews are constructing a new right turn-lane from northbound US 41 to Fruitville Road. Once constructed, the existing right turn-lane will be closed to traffic. Crews will then construct a pedestrian island and improve drainage. Nighttime/overnight northbound outside lane closures are also expected from 9 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. each morning while crews are working. Preferred Materials, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017. 

 

US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect daytime lane closures for barrier wall installation within the medians. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. Russell Engineering, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

 

US 41 from SR 789 Gulfstream Boulevard to the Ringling Bridge: Maintenance contracts project: Crews are cleaning storm sewer pipes, curb inlets and manholes. Expect nighttime/overnight intermittent lane closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. through mid-September. Use caution and expect possible delays.

 

SR 776/ N. Indiana Avenue south of Tangerine Woods Boulevard: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a driveway. Expect northbound outside lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, September 8. Use caution and expect possible delays.

 

SR 758/Bee Ridge Road/Osprey Avenue from Siesta Drive to Dunn Drive: Construction project:  Motorists can expect lane closures throughout the project while crews work on storm drainage testing, signage, miscellaneous concrete and other finish work as well as punch list items. Please stay alert for lane shifts within the project and exercise caution in those areas. Pay close attention to the traffic control devices. Driving through the traffic control devices and into the work zone is prohibited.  Be aware of slow moving construction equipment and plan additional travel time throughout the project.  

                                                                                                                       

The project consists of significant drainage improvements, removing old asphalt and resurfacing the roadway, reconstructing sidewalk, and installing new signalization in some areas.  The project also includes construction of eleven (11) pedestrian refuge islands on Bee Ridge Road between Dunn Drive and US 41. Expected completion of the $17 million project is fall of 2017.

Public Hearing Scheduled for the Cortez Bridge PD&E Study in Manatee County

Bartow, FL - The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District One, has scheduled a public hearing for the proposed improvements to State Road (SR 684) (Cortez Road Bridge) from SR 789 (Gulf Drive) to 123rd Street West in Manatee County, Florida. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, August 31, 2017, at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 6101 Cortez Road West, Bradenton, Florida. The hearing will begin as an informal open house at 5 p.m., with a formal presentation at 6 p.m. followed by a public oral comment period.

This hearing is being held to allow interested persons an opportunity to be informed and provide comments concerning the location; conceptual design; and social, economic, and environmental effects of the future repair or replacement of the Cortez Bridge on SR 684 in Manatee County. Replacement alternatives include a 35-foot vertical clearance drawbridge and a high-level fixed bridge within the existing corridor. A video presentation will explain the alternatives. 

The Type II Categorical Exclusion, along with other pertinent information developed by the Department, will be available for public review during regular business hours at the following locations: Island Branch Library, 5701 Marina Drive in Holmes Beach and Kirkwood Presbyterian Church office, 6101 Cortez Road West in Bradenton. These materials will also be available at the hearing site throughout the duration of the public hearing.

Persons desiring to submit written comments in place of or in addition to oral statements, may do so at the hearing or by sending them to Marlon Bizerra, Project Manager, at FDOT District One, P.O. The pavement along Moccasin Wallow Road at the I-75 interchange is also being reconstructed. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. Expect nighttime/overnight ramp closures to Moccasin Wallow Road from 11 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. each morning throughout the week of Sunday, August 13. Crews will begin with the southbound ramps followed by northbound. Motorists should follow the posted detour or find alternate routes. AJAX Paving Industries of Florida, LLC, is the contractor. Expected completion is summer 2018.

 I-75 at SR 64/Manatee Avenue Interchange: Construction project: This project

reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64. This week, crews will continue widening and resurfacing SR 64 eastbound, and will perform pile driving work. 

  • Motorists should expect lane closures on I-75 during nighttime/overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the duration of the construction.
  • Pile driving will occur Monday, August 14 through Friday, August 18.  Properties adjacent to the construction should anticipate noise from pile driving between 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late of 2019. The contractor is Prince Contracting LLC.

US 301 at the Hernando Desoto Bridge: Construction project: Crews are installing pile jackets, making concrete repairs and repairing the bridge fender system. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. Portions of Riverwalk along the seawall will be closed from early May through the end of August while crews are working on the seawall. Inland Construction and Engineering, Inc., is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

 US 301 from Erie/Old Tampa Road to Moccasin Wallow Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. No lane closures are expected but motorists should be aware of crews working along the roadway through Friday, August 18. Use caution while in the area.

 SR 789/Gulf Drive from SR 64/Manatee Avenue to SR 684/Cortez Road: Maintenance permit project: Manatee County is installing new force mains and water mains. For additional information about the project, please visit the project website at www.amipipereplacement.com.

 SR 684 from 92nd Lane to 82nd Street West: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. Expect intermittent east and westbound lane closures beginning Monday, August 14 through Monday, August 28. Use caution and expect possible delays.

 SR 70A/15th Street E from 44th Avenue E to 301 Boulevard: Maintenance contract project: Crews are cleaning ditches along the roadway. Expect intermittent daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a flagging operation through Tuesday, August 15. Use caution and expect possible delays.  

 SR 70 from 301 Boulevard to Tara Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway and making signal upgrades. Expect daytime and/or nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. Expected completion is late summer 2017. The contractor is Superior Asphalt, Inc.

SR 70 at Greenbrook Boulevard West: Construction project: Crews are installing a new traffic signal, crosswalks with pedestrian signals, and street lighting at the intersection.  This week, crews will work on punch list items and site cleanup. Expected completion is summer 2017.  Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC is the contractor.

SR 64 East near the Wauchula Myakka River Bridge: Maintenance contract project: Crews are cleaning ditches along the north side of the road (eastbound direction). No lane closures are expected between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. but motorists should be aware of crews working through mid-September 2017 and use caution.

Sarasota County's 12th Annual Sustainable Communities Workshop November 30, 2017

Help build a better future, together, through a sustainability workshop

SARASOTA COUNTY - Early-bird registration is now open for Sarasota County's 12th Annual Sustainable Communities Workshop on Nov. 30, a day-long event that showcases steps to building healthy, resilient, thriving communities. 
 
Wrapped with a "Building a Better Future, Together" theme, the workshop will draw together individuals, businesses, institutions and government bodies to learn about environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainability. Expert speakers will discuss the latest strategies, resources and best practices, and provide hands-on demonstrations.
 
"The workshop is a great way to network, learn about innovative projects happening here and in other communities, and how you can get involved," said Sara Kane, sustainability outreach coordinator with Sarasota County's UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability Department. "The individual actions you take can have a significant, positive impact for the whole community."
 
Florida and Sarasota County continue to experience rapid population growth and development, with no slowdown in sight. Against that backdrop, the annual workshop offers insight on sustainable approaches to energy use, construction, healthy living, transportation and more.
 
The 2017 workshop, to be held at the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Event and Conference Center, at 4740 Cattlemen Road in Sarasota, will tackle a suite of sustainability related topics, including:

  • Predictions and Preparations for Climate Change

  • Going Solar in the Sunshine State 

  • Engaging Community

  • Sharing a Pathway to Equity

  • Innovations in the Built Environment

Nathaniel Smith, founder and chief equity officer of the Partnership for Southern Equity, will deliver one of two keynote addresses. Smith's firm pushes for balanced growth and inclusive prosperity in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Randall Wells also will deliver a keynote. As director of the Chicago Zoological Society's Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, Wells has studied the effects of boating, fishing, and other human activities on the dolphin population.

I-75 at SR 64/Manatee Avenue Interchange: Construction project: This project

reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64. This week, crews will continue widening and resurfacing SR 64 eastbound, and will perform pile driving work. 

  • Motorists should expect lane closures on I-75 during nighttime/overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the duration of the construction.

  • Pile driving will occur Monday, August 7 through Friday, August 11.  Properties adjacent to the construction should anticipate noise from pile driving between 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late of 2019. The contractor is Prince Contracting LLC.

US 301 at the Hernando Desoto Bridge: Construction project: Crews are installing pile jackets, making concrete repairs and repairing the bridge fender system. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. Portions of Riverwalk along the seawall will be closed from early May through the end of August while crews are working on the seawall. Inland Construction and Engineering, Inc., is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

 

US 301 from Erie/Old Tampa Road to Moccasin Wallow Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on a force main. No lane closures are expected but motorists should be aware of crews working along the roadway through Tuesday, August 8. Use caution while in the area.

 

SR 789/Gulf Drive from SR 64/Manatee Avenue to SR 684/Cortez Road: Maintenance permit project: Manatee County is installing new force mains and water mains. For additional information about the project, please visit the project website at www.amipipereplacement.com.

I-75 (SR 93) / University Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)

Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place at night/overnight on northbound and southbound I-75 Sunday, August 6 through Saturday, August 12 between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. the following morning. Double lane closures begin at 11 p.m. Watch for shifts in traffic.

Temporary intermittent single and double lane closures are in place at night/overnight on eastbound and westbound University Parkway and at Cooper Creek Blvd./Cattlemen Rd. and at Market St./Lake Osprey Dr. Sunday, August 6 through Saturday, August 12 from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning. Traffic has shifted to one bridge (one lane for each direction) while crews are working on the opposite bridge. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph during construction. Southern Road and Bridge, LLC is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

 

US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.

 

US 41/Venice By-Pass from Gulf Coast Boulevard to Bird Bay Drive: Construction project: Crews continue installing utility and storm drain systems and constructing temporary pavement. Expect intermittent nighttime/overnight northbound and southbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. throughout the project limits while crews are working. Motorists should be mindful of the construction signs in place and traffic control officers and use caution while traveling through the project area. Bergeron Land Development is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

 

US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway; installing new drainage; installing highway lighting, curb and gutter; constructing new sidewalk, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on US 41; US 301; Fruitville Road, and Orange Avenue while crews are working. Crews are constructing a new right turn-lane from northbound US 41 to Fruitville Road. Once constructed, the existing right turn-lane will be closed to traffic. Crews will then construct a pedestrian island and improve drainage. Nighttime/overnight northbound outside lane closures are also expected from 9 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. each morning while crews are working. Preferred Materials, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017. 

 

US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect daytime lane closures for barrier wall installation within the medians. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. SR 776/ N. Indiana Avenue south of Tangerine Woods Boulevard: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a driveway. Expect northbound outside lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, August 11. Use caution and expect possible delays.

SR 758/Bee Ridge Road/Osprey Avenue from Siesta Drive to Dunn Drive: Construction project:  Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures as crews complete miscellaneous finish work in preparation for final layer of asphalt paving.  From Shade Avenue to Beneva Road, traffic is shifted to the outside 2 lanes while crews construct the remaining pedestrian refuge islands.  Please use caution in the areas that are closed for this work and pay close attention to the traffic control devices and barrels. Driving through the traffic control devices and into the work zone is prohibited.  Be aware of slow moving construction equipment and plan additional travel time throughout the project.  

                                                                                                                       

The project consists of significant drainage improvements, removing old asphalt and resurfacing the roadway, reconstructing sidewalk, and installing new signalization in some areas.  The project also includes construction of eleven (11) pedestrian refuge islands on Bee Ridge Road between Dunn Drive and US 41. Expected completion of the $17 million project is fall of 2017.

US 301 at the Hernando Desoto Bridge: Construction project: Crews are installing pile jackets, making concrete repairs and repairing the bridge fender system. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. Portions of Riverwalk along the seawall will be closed from early May through the end of August while crews are working on the seawall. Inland Construction and Engineering, Inc., is the contractor. Detour – I-75 Southbound Off-Ramp CLOSED at the I-75/University Parkway Interchange:

The contractor anticipates implementing a temporary detour route at the I-75/University Parkway interchange at night/overnight Thursday, July 20 between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. while crews level the overhead truss/signage.

Motorists traveling southbound on I-75 wishing to travel on University Parkway are directed to continue south on I-75, exit at eastbound Fruitville Road, enter northbound I-75, and exit at University Parkway/Exit 213.

Improvements being made as part of this project consist of constructing a diverging diamond interchange, adding an auxiliary lane on northbound and southbound I-75, constructing new bridges on  I-75 over University Parkway, widening of University Parkway, widening of I-75 bridges over Errie Creek and Foley Creek, realignment of on-ramps and off-ramps at I-75/University Parkway, addition of ponds, drainage improvements, new lighting and signalization, construction of a noise wall on the west side of I-75, sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways. Business US 41 at the Circus Drawbridge: Construction project: Crews are improving mechanical equipment; painting structural steel; making spall repairs, and replacing portions of sidewalk. Traffic will shift to one bridge (one lane for each direction) while crews are working on the opposite bridge. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph during construction. Southern Road and Bridge, LLC is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017.

Business US 41 at the Hatchett Creek Drawbridge: Crews are working on the bridge. Expect nighttime/overnight southbound outside lane closures from 9 p.m. each night to 4 a.m. each morning Wednesday, July 26 and Thursday, July 27. Use caution and expect possible delays.

US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.

US 41/Venice By-Pass from Gulf Coast Boulevard to Bird Bay Drive: Construction project: Crews continue installing utility and storm drain systems and constructing temporary pavement. Expect intermittent nighttime/overnight northbound and southbound lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. throughout the project limits while crews are working. Motorists should be mindful of the construction signs in place and traffic control officers and use caution while traveling through the project area. Bergeron Land Development is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2018.

US 41 over Myakkahatchee Creek: Construction project: Crews are constructing new pedestrian overpasses over Myakkahatchee Creek; improving drainage; installing guardrail, and constructing new sidewalk. Expect daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. Cone & Graham, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is summer 2017.

US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: US 41 from Browning Street to 11th Street: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway; installing new drainage; installing highway lighting, curb and gutter; constructing new sidewalk, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on US 41; US 301; Fruitville Road, and Orange Avenue while crews are working. Crews are constructing a new right turn-lane from northbound US 41 to Fruitville Road. Once constructed, the existing right turn-lane will be closed to traffic. Crews will then construct a pedestrian island and improve drainage. Nighttime/overnight northbound outside lane closures are also expected from 9 p.m. each night to 6 a.m. each morning while crews are working. Preferred Materials, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2017. 

US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect daytime lane closures for barrier wall installation within the medians. Median construction begins the week of Sunday, July 23. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. Russell Engineering, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.

SR 789/John Ringling Parkway at Bird Key: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing sidewalk, installing landscaping and irrigation. Expect possible daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, July 28. Use caution and expect possible delays.

SR 758/Bee Ridge Road/Osprey Avenue from Siesta Drive to Dunn Drive: Construction project:  Six (6) lanes of traffic are open the entire length of the project from US 41 to Bond Place.  However, motorists can still expect intermittent lane closures, including the bi-directional turn lane, as crews continue constructing the remaining pedestrian islands, storm drainage and completing miscellaneous finish work.   Please use caution in the areas that are closed for this work and pay close attention to the traffic control devices and barrels. Be aware of slow moving construction equipment and plan additional travel time throughout the project. The project consists of significant drainage improvements, removing old asphalt and resurfacing the roadway, reconstructing sidewalk, and installing new signalization in some areas.  The project also includes construction of eleven (11) pedestrian refuge islands on Bee Ridge Road between Dunn Drive and US 41. Expected completion of the $17 million project is fall of 2017.

SR 72 at the Stickney Point Drawbridge: Bridge maintenance project: Crews are working on the bridge. The pavement along Moccasin Wallow Road at the I-75 interchange is also being reconstructed. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures while crews are working. AJAX Paving Industries of Florida, LLC, is the contractor. Expected completion is summer 2018.

 

I-75 at SR 64/Manatee Avenue Interchange: Construction project: This project

reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64. This week, crews will continue widening and resurfacing SR 64 eastbound, perform site excavations, and install signage and silt fencing. 

  • Motorists should expect lane closures on I-75 during nighttime/overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the duration of the construction.
  • Crews will commence pile driving Thursday, July 20 and Friday, July 21.  Properties adjacent to the construction should anticipate noise from pile driving.
  • Lanes on SR 64 eastbound will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for resurfacing work on Sunday, July 16 through Thursday, July 20.

Construction project:  Beginning Monday July 17, 2017 through Thursday, July 19, 2017, all westbound traffic from Beneva Road to Phillippi Creek Bridge will temporarily shift to the north and the bi-directional turn lane in this area will close to implement a new traffic switch.  This switch will allow for six (6) lanes of traffic to be open the entire length of the project from US 41 to Bond Place.

Motorists should still expect intermittent lane closures, including the bi-directional turn lane, as crews construct the remaining pedestrian islands and drainage and complete miscellaneous finish work.   Please use caution in the areas that are closed and pay close attention to the traffic control devices and barrels.
