MOBILITY 2035

The Sarasota/Manatee MPO’s update of its Long Range Transportation Plan.

The year 2035 – what will it be like?  As the two counties and their cities grow in the future, they will need to respond to changes in travel patterns and needs, rising fuel and energy costs, climate change, economic and community redevelopment opportunities, and many other issues that affect the region. How well does the existing transportation system meet current and future needs? How will it need to change over the next 25 years? How can those changes be funded given various competing demands?

The Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will be considering these questions over the next 15 months as it works to update the region’s Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The MPO includes elected officials from local governments within Manatee and Sarasota County who work together to decide how to use federal and state revenues to improve the area’s transportation system.

The purpose of Mobility 2035 is to develop a safe, efficient and financially attainable transportation system that provides mobility and accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. Some of the key issues include transit service expansion and regional connectivity, protecting the region’s environment and natural resources, discouraging sprawl development, creating a more healthy and livable community, and supporting economic opportunity in targeted areas.

Renaissance Planning Group has been hired to assist the Sarasota/Manatee MPO in developing the plan, which must be updated every five years.
